I think this website, although not related to football, shows how children will learn and develop. http://www.hole-in-the-wall.com/Beginnings.html

Now, this can be used in relation to this discussion - children left to play will develop, they will see issues and problems that need to be solved. Whether those problems occur consistently enough to ingrain solutions is dependant on the the environment.

I doubt if world class performers could be created from this method but a good standard would be achieved. We could be world beaters if we played holland on the corner of 3 streets, played on a diagonal rhombus shaped pitch with one 2.5m wide goal and one 1.7m wide goal. ;-)

It's not however going to do any harm to let kids play at their own leisure until they get to 12-14 age group when they start formalised coaching...hang on, isn't that what most of the rest of the world do?

I cant disagree with any of the above , but why does it have to be either/or? Why cant it be both?

I realise this a "perfect world" scenario but why cant a kid be taught good habits, work on agility etc then on another occaision down the park with his mates playing? In my eyes its all good.

The Rubbish at Football thread, indicates just that - as coaches we have nearly all improved as footballers from being coaches and for the most part we developed an interest in pick up/street football games. Sounds to me now like when need more of both.

More "street" based football and more qualified coaches with on emphasis on the coaching the kids game rather than the adults game.

Perhaps this is the natural progression for GUBOG. Awareness has been raised about the need to change. Now it may need to add quality coaching to its armoury. Quality coaching focusing on individual technique etc then "free play".

The best way for children to lean football is to be taught correctly.
