UEFA B

Postby mattycoach » Wed Feb 03, 2010 3:00 pm

Hi all,

I'm 18 and just about to take my UEFA B assessment. I was just wondering if anyone has completed this (or completing) and would like to comment on what you think of the Functions/SSG's/Phases and woluld you coach this way when you go back to your clubs?

Hi Matty,
its like your driving test mate you drive in a way that will please the examiner and tick all of the boxes, then when you have passed you drive in your own style.
I thoroughly enjoyed the Course and took a lot from it but i have never coached like it with my team.

Hi Hoppy!

I think you're right mate. I have my final topics in less than two weeks - worked really hard for 9 months so fingers crossed! Any advice you can give me?

Relax and enjoy it but biggest thing is to make sure your group of coaches being assessed work as a team and help each other bring out the Key points in your allocated topic.
We had a bit of a siege mentality going on us against the assessors and it really focused the coaches to "play" as coaches and not as PLAYERS.

Matty well done you -great achievement for a young coach .

Advice - I can write a novel on it (being a recent failed candidate of the level 3 - :o -however it was a great experince for me and a massive step for me to actually cross the white line and deliver so to to speak )

First up KNOW your topic inside out upside down back to front .

Big one this one -IS IT GAME REALISTIC ??-your set up and start points .

Be organised and control your session and your players -dont be worried about managing the opposition -you cannot coach them as such but if you want the oppo defence to keep a high line and they are not -make sure they do .Players get lazy and can muck you about -so stay strong with them .

Attacking topic -get the goal quickly or shot on goal then your players buy into it -yep this is good I can see this .

coach what you see -me I MISSED a -fantastic cresent shaped run striker just about to spin and turn -midfielder had the ball -and I go stop stand still
I just did not see the run my focus was on the ball and around it -never saw the players movement away from the ball until I interupted it and yep I cringed - and I just went to the young lad "I am so sorry that was a great run "
so I lost my focus for a minute or so .....

So stay focused -and only coach your topic -nothing else .
and GOOD LUCK
take your passion ,and make it happen .

and do I coach like it at club level hmmmm

never in a million years -however little phrases seem to appear involuntarily from my mouth

well if I am a striker and your defensive stance is poor -like it is now ......

and if you think that me as a midfielder is just going to let you walk through my third and get a shot on goal ....think again because here comes the front screen ...

and definately this one ....if I do this and you move here ,what do we have ?-do you see this on match of the day ? -is it game realistic ????-course it is !!!!

yep they did a good job with me have to say ...
take your passion ,and make it happen .

I have definitely coached this way in all of my clubs, but the standard of player affects what can be achieved. I love the ssg and pop setup, not so much the functions though. It works really well when you only have half a pitch to train on, and gives defenders and attackers a chance to have a go in both positions.
Some academies follow the same pattern, others avoid it completely. What is key to your sessions is that they have a focus, they progress naturally, and that what you add is relevant.

Angela i wouldn't agree with the only coach your topic and nothing else statement, while you are coaching a team if you notice something that is obviously not right surely you wouldn't be a very good coach to let it go without pointing it out.
I know this happened to me in my assessment and i corrected what was going wrong with question and answer to the player involved even though it wasn't to do with my topic and when getting a debrief from the assessor he mentioned it and it definetly helped.
