Used this to great success with my old adult team but didnt use it as a diamond (we uised 3 central Attacking Midfielders (although 2 were allocated left and right with the aim to attack down that flank if the chance came up)

Just made sure that the 3 AM shuffled across when the ball is on one side leaving the opposite flank exposed. They should be able to adapt quick enough if the ball is switched although we also had the CF drop in and cover if playing full backs who tended to push on (in a 4-4-2). The one holding mid offers protection and allows 5 players to attack (as well as full backs)

Certainly worked for us but I guess its dependant on your players.
Seems like they were wrong after all..
