Ha ha!

Probably brought that upon myself!! - Just wondering because I work with both, and I do see a lot of similarities. I read an article about a coach who went over to Brazil to coach young adults. Before the session commenced, he gave them all footballs as you do whilst he was setting up the pitch etc. To his amazement, they al got in small groups and kept the ball up with each other. On the contrary here in the UK, he did this and every player pinged the ball into the goals.

Very interesting if you ask me?

Matty, that has nothing to do with age, young or old they all seem to do it here in the UK it's a culture thing - you know they way they are brought up.

In essence is summarises how little we (that's the Royal WE) focus on skills, but things are changing

I agree it's a cultural thing however I think the problem lies with what our coaches are coaching! I've seen coaches do sessions with an aim of a long ball!!

Nothing wrong with a well intentioned long pass to exploit space - it's every bit as valid a tactic as a 1-2, a dribble or a shot.

So far as differences in how players act with a ball - a mate of mine has been to Africa and told me the kids there want you to try and take the ball off them so they can show you how well they can keep it, how tricky and skillful they are. I am also led to believe by another mate that they are like that in Spain too.

Whereas here, you give players a ball and they seem to want to kick it as far away from them as they can get it :?:

Kind of goes along with another thread that was running. I agree theres nothing wrong if they are practising for a long pass or trying to increase kicking distance.

Dont think thats always the case.I will use the teams who I coach as examples.

Our U12's usually get themselves into a few groups and one WILL be smashing a ball at the goal. Another will be keeping the ball up or doing tricks etc.. another will be tackilng each other and the final one will probably be exchanging music or pictures on their phones.

The school team (U10&U11) will set themselves up into teams (Arsenal/West Ham/Man Utd/The Rest - based on who they support) and play a 3 or 4 team game All v All or will have a person in goal and then crossing and shooting.

The ADULT team I coach will ALL be smashing abll at the goal.
Seems like they were wrong after all..

If there is a goal to shoot at, everyone, from every country, of every age, will start shooting at that goal.
Don't kid yourself to think that it is a culture thing!
